Amid a wilderness of cruel waves I laboured.
I rowed alone atop them as the light departed.
In despair I ceded, but upon gazing upward,
Witnessed the space ’tween each star exhale a marvel:
The loom revealed;
The warp, the weft arrayed;
Eternity ablaze.
And like a brutal branding, the vision seared my senses.
I made to clamber out the boat to die but paused to gaze again
At the loom revealed;
The warp, the weft arrayed.
The vault was opened
On that black ocean.
A melange of awe, rapture and dread
To ponder what hand is weaving that thread!
